Rui combines a decade of experience as a professional athlete with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from University College London and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the University of Oregon. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at London Business School. Prior to pursuing further education, Rui spent 2 years working for Sport Singapore in the Coaching Development department, and 3 years working in Business Development for Singapore’s top lifestyle media publisher, TheSmartLocal.com.
Over his career as an athlete, Rui has represented Singapore at numerous international championships including the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and World Championships. Rui made history for Singapore by becoming the only man to win consecutive SEA Games Marathon golds in 2015 and 2017. He then ended Singapore’s 40 year wait for a 10,000m medal by clinching the silver in 2023 in a new national record.
Rui has also represented top shoe companies since 2012, including Nike, ASICS and Under Armour. He has also been signed as an ambassador for a range of other sports brands and events, including Pocari Sweat, Garmin, H-TWO-O, and the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon.
Rui currently holds 6 Singapore national records: Mile (road), 5,000m, 5km road, 10,000m, half marathon, marathon. He still enjoys running marathons and balances training with work and academics, running 1-2 hours a day, covering about 100-120km per week, and believes that the sport of running unites and makes the world a better place. From 2010-2011, Rui worked as a training specialist for the Singapore Army, coordinating fitness training regimes for battalions of soldiers.
